Islamabad : Benazir Bhutto and her dad, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto must be smiling from their graves. The Bhutto dynasty has reemerged again. Husband of Benazir Bhutto, Asif Ali Zardari, was elected the new president of PakistanĀ to replaced Pervez Musharraf, who was forced to resign after ruling for nine years.

Asif Ali Zardari

Asif Ali Zardari took over the leadership of the Pakistan People Party (PPP) after his wife, Benazir Bhutto, was assasinated in December. In his acceptance speech, he paid tribute to his late wife by saying “I accept the presidency of Pakistan in the name of… Benazir Bhutto. I accept this in her name and in the name of all the martyrs of democracy.”

Removing Pervez Musharraf is the first step. The toughest challenge that lies ahead is to heal the country of of its divisve politics among the democrats and islamist. Pakistan is has rough relationship with its neighbours like India, IranĀ and Afghanistan over the years. Zardari has to establish relationship with these countries and to balance the influence of USA at the same time. If he is seen as a puppet of USA, then he will have challenge in getting internal support for his policies.

Best of luck to Zardari. Long Live Bhutto.
